Every year during the NFL season, it’s not a matter of if a couple head coaches will get the boot, it’s a matter of when. Using wild assumptions and uneducated guesses, I’ll name a couple coaches who might be playing golf in November.
Tom Cable
The whole situation of punching his assistanthelps his chances of getting fired, but Al Davis’ system for picking a head coach is so erratic and unpredictable that who knows, maybe Cable breaking someone’s jaw makes Davis more supportive of his head coach. Davis might think that Cable’s got “a lotta moxie.” By the way, if anyone has audio of Al Davis saying “moxie,” please send it to me.
The Oakland Raiders seemed to improve a little after Lane Kiffin was fired and Cable replaced him, but we’ll have to see how he does in a full season. Jeff Garcia at quarterback and this year predicting to be when Darren McFadden breaks out could help Walter Sobchak keep his job, but it’s yet to be seen.
Odds – 10:1
Josh McDaniels
In one off-season McDaniels found a way to trade away the “franchise quarterback,” alienate his whole team, and piss off a fanbase. Great job! Really though, Jay Cutler’s a pussy, and Brandon Marshall’s pretty uppity for someone who allegedly hits women and throws bricks at their cars.
Drafting a running back in the first round when you already have about 3 or 4 capable ones on your team doesn’t help either. Fans already miss Mike Shanahan, because while he blew a three-game lead in the AFC West division last year, he still has a storied record with Denver that includes back-to-back Super Bowl championships. If the Broncos go anything worse than 3-3 in their first six games, look for the latest Patriots “prodigy” to be kicked out to a loud applause.
Odds – 4:1
Wade Phillips
The Cowboys have high expectations every year, regardless of talent or skill, and every year they fail miserably. Jerry Jones always laughs off rumors of Phillips getting canned, but if there’s a poor start this year, it might not be so funny to him anymore. What’s happened to the Cowboys organization isn’t all Phillips’ fault, though. Poor drafting and the visible mindset that big names > actual skill have turned America’s team into a joke. This is probably the most likely big-name coach to get fired during the season in my book. Put some money on it.
Odds – 3:1
Other coaches to consider: Marvin Lewis, Dick Jauron, Brad Childress (if Favre turns out to lead the Vikings to a 1-5 start or something, but my money’s on him being fired at the end of the year if the Vikings aren’t better than first-round playoffs).
