It seems like every week now, Terrell Owens makes sure to get some beat reporter all pumped up about a quote that he can build a sidebar around, but that isn’t unusual to expect from a player like Owens.
This week, with the Bengals playing the Jets? Owens called Darrelle Revis an “average” cornerback and a “slouch.”
NYDailyNews.com:
Bengals receiver Terrell Owens struck a different tone later in the day when addressing reporters in Cincinnati as he sent a challenge to Revis, who referred to the receiver as a “slouch” in a word association game on the NFL Network last January.
“Just an average corner to me,” said Owens, who leads the Bengals with 62 receptions, when asked about the All-Pro. “Everybody has assessed his abilities as far as what he did last year, shutdown corner, this and that. He did very well last year. But I think I’m looking forward to the challenge just like he’s looking forward to it.”
If this was said before last season’s playoff game between the Jets and Bengals, I would have said, “Boy, what an interesting addition to the plot-line leading up to this game!” However, this quote came before a game with the 8-2 Jets and the…. 2-8 Bengals.
The only reasons this game is getting talk are because it’s being played prime-time on Thanksgiving and because it’s being seen as a trap game, just like the 12:30 Thanksgiving game between the 8-2 Patriots and 2-8 Lions. Next week, the Patriots and Jets will be playing each other on Monday night so everyone expects them not to give a shit about the games they’re playing this week.
I’ve never liked the concept of trap games. You have to take one game at a time and don’t overlook anyone. The Patriots normally do a good job, but the loss to the Browns was called a trap game, since they had to play the Steelers and the Colts the two weeks after that. Cleveland was at home and used a ton of sneaky (but really smart) plays to break down the defense, and it all worked perfectly.
Alright, I’m really getting off-topic here. Like, Andy Rooney levels. What I’m trying to say is that T.O. is stupid and the idea of trap games is debatable. Those are two things you probably knew before you read this post, so I’m sorry. Email me and I’ll give you a full refund.
