There will be at least four head coaching jobs open by the end of the regular season and probably a couple more due to contracts or overall shittiness (John Fox, Marvin Lewis?). Normally, this is a great chance for some stellar coordinators to jump up to the next level and get one of these positions. One name popping up this season is Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

From Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Sheldon Brown, a nine-year veteran NFL cornerback with six playoff seasons under his belt, says Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is ready to be a head coach and promises to be a good one.

With about eight to 10 head coaching jobs likely opening by next week, Ryan is sure to get some interviews.

April 24, 2010, from ESPN:

Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren says the team has no plans to play Texas quarterback Colt McCoy as a rookie after selecting him in the third round of the NFL draft.

Though Cleveland fans may already be clamoring to see McCoy play, Holmgren cautions that it would be a mistake to put him on the field before he’s ready.

Holmgren, who has coached Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Steve Young and Brett Favre, said teams run the risk of “scarring” a young quarterback by playing him too soon.

Dec. 16, 2010, from the Cleveland Browns Twitter:

Mangini on Colt McCoy: The plan is for him to start this Sunday and the rest of the season. He’s been able to improve each week.

You probably know Joshua Cribbs as the main producer of any Cleveland Browns highlights these past couple seasons, and maybe you’re aware of the charity work he has done for his community. An alumnus of Kent State, he’s a hometown-athlete replacement for that dude who used to play for the Cavaliers. Even with all that, it’s still a little surprising to me that Cribbs defended James Harrison, who knocked him out of the game last week against the Steelers with a brutal hit, and told him to keep playing his game. What?

Let’s just get to the point of this: Alex Mack, center for the Browns, said that Shaun Smith of the Chiefs (a former Brown) grabbed his balls during a play. Gross.

I try to stay away from lists as much as I can, because so many writers use them when talking about sports, but I feel like this is the best way for this kind of post. Because I don’t give people my opinions enough, I wanted to point out some players and teams this season who could be really fascinating and add another layer of entertainment to watching football.

I’m not going to number them because you can all count (hopefully), but trust me, there are ten. And I promise, none of them have to do with the Patriots. My homerism will stay repressed.

Because Samer and I think these are awesome, and completely worth watching, here is 30 minutes of the 1957 NFL Championship Game between the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns from Briggs Stadium in Detroit, in stunning color TV!

We just wanted to bring you these videos to remind Lions and Browns fans of back in the time when they weren’t scrounging for better draft position, but instead fighting at the top in a battle of dominance. Don’t get too misty-eyed. Also, we didn’t really have any content planned for today and we’re not talking about the playoffs because you can find that anywhere.

If you’ve been watching any football today, the Cleveland Browns and their game against the Kansas City Chiefs should stand out for you. Records were made by Joshua Cribbs and Jerome Harrison. Fortunately, I decided a couple of days ago to start Cribbs as my third receiver in one fantasy league (that counts return yards) because Kevin Walter screws me over and Cribbs does basically everything for the Browns, so why not?

No, not in a creepy way or anything like that. Although a lot of Browns fans (and people in general) really don’t like Mangini and want him fired, I really don’t think there’s any way you can question the effort he’s putting into trying to make this team successful, even when staring down one of the worst records in the leagues right now.
